Role of Support Networks in Success of High Achievers

Couples hold hands to support each other while discussing family issues

High achievers are a rare type of individuals—ambitious, goal-focused, self-disciplined individuals—and driven by a strong innate personal desire to accomplish meaningful, important goals. Their attributes extend to their roles as members of a team. They display natural leadership qualities and often help fellow team members achieve their goals. As capable as they are, high achievers need social support for mental health to make them ultimately more productive and successful.

What is a Support Network?

A support network is a collection of family, peers, friends, and mentors who provide guidance and add value to one’s life. They can offer advice, resources, and perspective to bolster your resolve. They can provide feedback and direction when you may be lost or confused. Support networks also provide an increased feeling of self-worth, a sense of belonging, and increased feelings of security.

Finding a network of people who can provide guidance and assistance is critical in the achievement of success of any endeavor, including high achievers. Doing work in isolation is difficult, let alone accomplishing daunting tasks. The bigger your goals and the more challenging the work involved, the more mental health support you will ultimately need to be successful.

Support Networks for the Success of High Achievers

Support networks are indispensable in achieving the goals of high achievers. Support may take various forms, each of them useful, relevant, and well-suited to a particular aspect of accomplishing tasks in different situations. They will come from different people in your support network.

Types of Support Network

  1. Emotional Support: Emotional support for mental health can come from your spouse who will encourage you during the times working on your goals becomes arduous. It can also come from parents or close friends who know you on a deeper, personal level.
  2. Informational Support: Giving you additional knowledge both professional or personal, suggestions, and other information may be provided by a mentor or someone who has likely already accomplished what you have set out to do.
  3. Instrumental Support: These are concrete, tangible forms of assistance usually provided by someone who sacrifices some resource for your benefit.
  4. Appraisal Support: Similar to informational support, appraisal support focuses on information directly relevant to self-evaluation such as constructive criticism.

It’s important to have a support network!

Effective goal setting requires that you share your goals with your network. If your support network knows what you are trying to accomplish, they will be more likely to offer assistance and mental health support when they can. Seek out people with similar ideas or with a mindset similar to yours. Start spending time around those people. The environment you spend time in ultimately determines the type of person you become.
