Social Media Ruins Relationships?

Young boys smiling happy hugging at the beach.

Over the years, social media has changed the way we communicate and build relationships. Social media, undoubtedly, has made it easier to meet new people while also staying in touch with family and friends from near and far. While social media has made it easier to connect with people we otherwise wouldn’t have, it’s important to note that it has also created a negative impact on relationships.

Negative Impact of Social Media on Relationships

  1. Too much time on social media. Many people spend hours each day scrolling through their feeds, liking and commenting on posts, and interacting with others. Bonding may be more challenging as a result of decreased face-to-face contact. Social media ruins relationships because people may feel more connected to their devices than to those around them, it can cause feelings of loneliness and isolation.
  2. Social isolation. How does social media affect relationships in social isolation;  people tend to be more connected to their devices than those around them, it’s easy to feel isolated and lonely.
  3. Increased insecurity in relationships. Jealousy and insecurity in relationships are also elevated by social media. People can easily see what their online partners are doing, who they are talking to, and what they are posting. Particularly if one or both partners are involved with individuals they don’t know or trust, this can cause jealousy and insecurity. Due to trust issues in the relationship, social media ruins relationships and can cause fights and even break ups.
  4. Infidelity. How does social media affect relationships? People can now connect with people outside of romantic relationships more easily than ever thanks to social media, which makes it simpler for people to cheat.  Even those in long-term relationships can now meet new people and begin romantic relationships thanks to social media and dating apps. This can lead to mistrust, which is fatal to any relationship.
  5. Blurred boundaries. Thanks to social media, the line between our personal and professional lives has become even more blurred. How does social media affect relationships when there are blurred lines? When people use the same social media accounts for their personal and professional activities, it can be difficult to separate them. This can cause problems if a person’s personal contacts see messages or interactions intended for their professional contacts, or vice versa. Problems arise when a person’s personal life begins to affect their professional life or vice versa.

How to Have a Healthy Relationship with Social Media

Despite the potential negative effects of social media on relationships, there are ways to maintain healthy boundaries and protect your relationship. Here are some tips:

  1. Set Boundaries. One of the most important things you can do to maintain a healthy social media relationship is to set boundaries. Discuss with your partner what is okay and what is not when it comes to social media. For instance, you can agree to unfollow an ex-partner. Establishing these boundaries helps build trust in the relationship and prevents potential issues from arising.
  2. Limit Your Time on Social Media. It is important to limit the time you spend on social media, especially if it affects your relationship. This way you can spend quality time with your partner without distractions which then strengthens the bond between you and avoids possible misunderstandings. Social media ruins relationships when you let it distract you from what is in the present, and miss out on important moments.
  3. Be Transparent. When it comes to social media and relationships, transparency is key especially if you are in a committed relationship. By being open with your partner about who you communicate with online to prevent any misunderstandings or feelings of insecurity.
  4. Don’t Share Too Much.  Oversharing online can lead to feelings of discomfort or jealousy by your partner, so be mindful of what you post and who you communicate with.
  5. Communicate Openly. Healthy communication online and offline is important for relationships to thrive. By being open and honest about concerns you have about social media and discussing how social media affects your relationship, you can work together to find solutions.

Don’t let social media ruin your relationships!

While social media has made our relationships with each other easier, it also causes jealousy, insecurity and mistrust to rise. Social media ruins relationships, but by setting boundaries, limiting our time on social media, being transparent, not overdoing it, and communicating openly, we can maintain healthy relationships both online and offline.
